What is gum disease?
Periodontal gum disease is caused by the chronic build-up of plaque around your teeth.  The plaque bacteria causes inflammation of the gums.  Over time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line which causes gum disease.  The gums then separate from the teeth, leaving both bone and teeth compromised.  If untreated, teeth will loosen and fall out.  Treatment is available.
